Rio Tinto and global venture builder Founders Factory have selected six startups from over five hundred applicants to accelerate technology development across the mining sector. The strategic investments target persistent industry challenges, focusing on deploying artificial intelligence and spatial data to enhance the exploration and processing of critical minerals.
Selecting the Next Cohort
Addressing unprecedented global demand for raw materials such as copper and lithium, Rio Tinto has rigorously selected six new technology ventures for its mining accelerator program. The intense four-month screening process highlighted the rapidly growing venture capital interest within the mining sector. The chosen startups represent a diverse array of solutions, ranging from physical artificial intelligence development at Foresight Spatial Labs to autonomous airborne neutron mapping engineered by Voluna, all aimed at drastically improving resource delineation.
Optimizing Mineral Recovery
Beyond basic exploration, the accelerator strongly emphasizes improving chemical processing methodologies to safely secure supply chains. For example, selected startup Chemshift is developing a low-cost technology platform specifically engineered to refine crude lithium products directly into battery-grade material. Additionally, Supra is engineering specialized supramolecular cartridges to efficiently extract high-purity critical minerals, while Watergenics focuses on the real-time analysis of industrial aqueous streams to continually optimize operational sustainability and water management during processing operations.
Accelerating Real-World Deployment
The partnership leverages Founders Factory's startup scaling expertise and Rio Tinto's massive operational footprint to quickly bridge the gap between initial concept and commercialization. According to Rio Tinto General Manager of Innovation Emily Hilton, the initiative provides founders with direct access to technical experts and live operational environments, which is crucial for authentic testing. The program's broader portfolio has already raised more than $120 million in follow-on funding, demonstrating significant commercial traction for these emerging technological solutions.
