Lithium Argentina is accelerating the production ramp-up at its flagship Argentine development project to capitalize on improving product quality and anticipated pricing benefits later this fiscal year.
CaucharÃ-Olaroz Achieves Production Milestone as Volumes Rise
Lithium Argentina achieved a significant production milestone during the first quarter of 2024 at its CaucharÃ-Olaroz project. The site produced 4,500 tons of lithium carbonate during this three-month period. This output represents a 20% sequential increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. Pushing different components of the plant to higher operating rates during the ramp-up phase helped demonstrate the capacity of the facility.
Guidance Reaffirmed as Critical Transaction Funding Approaches
Management reaffirmed its full-year production target of 20,000 to 25,000 tons of lithium carbonate. CEO Sam Pigott stated: "The Pastos Grandes transaction remains on track to be finalized around the end of Q2, providing a further $70 million to support our operations in Argentina." The company is also working with its partner Ganfeng to pursue additional long-term debt options to support future growth.
Planned Maintenance and KCL Commissioning Target Reliability
To address reliability issues, the company executed a planned shutdown in April to replace piping and pump seals. The joint venture team is currently focusing on commissioning the potassium chloride circuit, which represents the final subsystem to commission at the CaucharÃ-Olaroz segment. The team successfully ran both trains independently and tested them to high throughput levels. Although electrical storms caused power disruptions in February and March, the company is implementing a mitigation plan.
Quality Improvements Expected to Drive Favorable Pricing Adjustments
During the Q&A session, Sam Pigott explained that product quality has improved dramatically, and the site now meets most battery specifications. While potassium remains an outlier, getting the potassium chloride train running consistently will resolve this issue. Although monthly production figures will remain confidential to avoid confusion, the second half of the year is expected to yield higher volumes than the first half. Finished product inventory built up substantially at the end of the quarter due to improved shipment plans.
